Windows Installer 3.1

Looking at the discussion I see this has been a problem for some time.

I was trying to install TaxCut 07 and it would not allow it because the
installer was out of date..or something.

I checked my automatice updates and noticed that I have about 127 that were
unsuccessful. I tried doing an update and it would not do Microsoft Windows
3.1 and another Security update.

I checked this forum and have tried various solutions that have been
successful for others but they all failed.

I tried resetting the files in WU and got a failure on regsvr32 wuweb.dll. I
also tried manually downloading windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe" /wuforce and
forcing it. No luck. Then there was regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll, no
joy there either.

The last thing I have tried was to download and run Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24
which ran into access denial in the MSI and WU sections.

I am at a loss, I can't do my taxes and am going to miss out on getting back
the interest free loan that I have given the government. Even worse, I am
missing out on all the wonderful and innovative updates from Microsoft. Bill
with think I don't appreciate him anymore. I can't believe that as long as
this has been a problem, that no one in Redmond (or Bangalore) has developed
a solution.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I don't want the IRS to kick in
my door and drag me away.

Assuming WinXP SP2, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 (ignore the
title if not applicable)

I have tried both the methods on the page you referenced. Both of them
indicated Okay when I ran them but I am still unable to install updates.
Checking my system it looks like Auto Update failed when it tried to make
updates on 10/23/07 and there have been none since.

When I go to the update page and try to update, both in 'express' or
"custom" modes, it fails

It always tells me that I have an update failure on two updates:

Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

I think the failure of those two updates is preventing any of the other
updates and my Taxcut 07 from loading.

As I said, I ran your method and looked around and tried some that TaurArian
suggested in other threads but have had no success.

I made a .bat file and reregistered my .dll's as I found in another thread.
That seems to have taken care some of the problem, now my update history is
blank. But I still get a failure on those two updates.

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB123456).

If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE, call the
above number and ask to be transferred to the Consumer IE7 queue (which is
47830).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.
