Windows Installer 3.1 Error number: 0xD0000005

I installed Windows XP Home Edition OEM version with SP2 on a new hard drive.
I have not activated it yet. When I try to manually update windows it tries
to install Windows Installer 3.1 and comes up with error number: 0xD0000005.

This happens even with automatic update. Before I activate windows XP I
want to download all the updates especially the critical ones!!

Help!!! I need to download updates. What can I do?
