Windows Installer 3.1 RC1 ?

Today WindowsUpdate (or rather AutoUpdate) installed Windows Installer
3.1 on my Windows XP Pro SP2. After rebooting I found an entry in my
Add/Remove Programs "Windows Installer 3.1 RC1". I also found
C:\WINDOWS\MSI31-RC1.log - both of which seem to indicate that I have a
beta or release candidate installed.

Is that normal that WindowsUpdate now installs beta ware without even
telling me? It just said

Windows Installer 3.1

The Microsoft® Windows® Installer 3.1 is the application installation
and configuration service for Windows and is available for Microsoft
Windows 2000 SP3 and later, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows XP
SP1, Microsoft Windows XP SP2, and Microsoft Windows Server 2003. The
additional features in version 3.1 help make creating, distributing, and
managing updates to applications easier and more efficient.

I also get an update notification about windows installer 3.1 but in my case
it causes a freeze when i try to install it. I imagine this RC comes with
windows update version 6 BETA. Is there any way to downgrade windows update
back to version 5. That might resolve my problem.

Yes, I also use the WindowsUpdate Beta version - that would explain it.

Sorry, I don't know how to go back to the regular version - have your
tried http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ ?

Any idea how to fix this. I have a team of developers which is down right now
because that damn betas installer craches their machines. I tried
uninstalling and that did not help. Please let me know what you did to get
that buggy software off you machines. Thanks!

Well i deactivted the automatic Windows Update in the Security Control

It helped. But that is not the best solution.

FIXED: Here is how.
Had to download the windows insstaller 3.1 rc1 executable and put it on the
affected machine. Reboot that machine in safe mode. Then install 3.1rc1,
reboot back into normal mode and everything works. Good luck.

Just for everyone else's information:

Had trouble finding that windows installer 3.1 rc1 executable (I weren't
familiar where windows update stores these files), I found it reading
msi31-rc1.log and seeked update.exe and installed it.

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\4636270f8 91757d513f721cb3825dad2\update\update.exe

btw, thought that I wasn't newbie but, live and learn

I have the same problem with a handful of machines. It's causing me lots of
headaches! I can't seem to install the update manually from the given
location. I get:

"MSI31-RC1 installation did not complete"

I thought MS never released beta's ???

Has anyone else managed to fix it?

Ok I've worked out my problem. I was running:

"C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\4636270f 891757d513f721cb3825dad2\update\update.exe"

However, I found that by running:

"C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\4636270f 891757d513f721cb3825dad2\WindowsInstaller-31RC1-x86.exe"

fixed the problem. This problem was occuring only on IBM ThinkPad T42 and
R51 series. Strange.
