In trying to install Java 6 u18 I started getting the messag

THIS ACTION ONLY VALID FOR PRODUCTS CURRENTLY INSTALLE

At that point Java, which had always worked, stopped working

After reading this forum I downloaded the Windows Install Cleanup an
removed the Java 6 u18 from the list of installed products

Java does not appear in the Control Panel under Programs, the registr
has no Java 6.18 remnants I can see and Java does not appear in th
Windows Install Cleanup list

Yet when I re-download Java, as soon as the install starts it says,

THE SOFTWARE HAS ALREADY BEEN INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER< WOULD YOU LIK
TO REINSTALL IT and if you say yes you get the THIS ACTION ONLY VALI
FOR PRODUCTS CURRENTLY INSTALLED message

Going round in circles, I thought the WIC utility would do it, bu
didn't. Help

Kinda sucks - but isn't really a Vista issue.

Try JavaRa - may be able to clean up the Java Runtime Environment mess.

I believe this may relate directly to the fact that you removed it from
there with the installer cleanup.

A trick often used is to reinstall the original program (i.e., not 18, but
the prior release!) and then reinstall 18. Or install, then remove, 16 and
then install 18, whatever works.

System Restore is a possible strategy too - restore to before you started
all of this. If you're lucky, things will be OK.

HTH...

It's clearly checking files on the disk rather than registry entries.

Check in "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information" for
starters ...
