Running xp pro sp2, ms office 2000....
on trying virtually any task, not just in office programs....but also, for
example, start>control panel or other tasks.....I get a pop up dialog box
saying
"Windows Installer:
Preparing to install" ...

Nothing is specified for install, just this blank dialog box....

Tried most fixes I can see on this site with no success; any suggestions?
Thanks

Ouch ... the one way to resolve this would be to run the Windows
Installer Cleanup Utility ... but, since there is no program/app listed,
running it would be a crap shoot.
What is the last program that was installed ? That *might* be a clue as
to what's causing the issue.

Also, this may indicate that the registry has become corrupted.
Is there a System Restore point that you can roll back to that was
created just before this started occurring ?

Thanks for hte advice: tried the clean up already, no joy.........
This mess has gone on for a bit but seems to relate to a dud iinstall of
office pro 2007 over office 2000.........
Not sure if we have a srp we can roll back to.I'm getting a little nervous
about making changes.....

The quickest way to resolve this issue would be to uninstall Office 2007
and then run the Windows Installer doo-dah to clean up the Windows
Installer configuration information for Office 2000. It may not even be
necessary after uninstalling Off 2007, but quien sabe ?
Then reboot the system and install Off 2007.
At the very least you'll know if the issue is related to the
installation files of Office or if it's a corrupted registry.

I had the test version and decided I didn't want it, but can't seem to delete it, as the file 'GrooveMisc.dll' can't be deleted. The most annoying result of this is the random appearance of Windows Installer trying to reinstall Office 2007. Is there any way to stop this short of reformatting my machine?? I really don't want or need Office 2007.

How does this relate to Windows Update, Phil?

This issue has nothing to do windows update. You might try and read the below MS KB
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
