"Windows\Installer" directory gone wild

Folks,

Over the past few months, my "windows\Installer" directory seems to have
gone wild. By this, I mean that it keeps increasing in size until now
it has over 10 GB of files in it. I don't know why it is getting this
large nor do I know if I can safely delete (or move to a USB drive)
files in it.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

P.S. My Windows XP SP2 machine is not particularly healthy as Office
Updates will not install (I worked with Microsoft on it for a couple of
months until they gave up (or decided that supporting XP issues wasn't
worthwhile) so each "Microsoft Update" has all Office Updates failing.

Yeah! Mine is nearly 1 GB.
Can we delete these files once they are actually installed on our system??
