Windows Installer Failure

I had to reinstall Windows XP Home using the upgrade method. After
completing, I went to the Windows Update site and started to update. The
site said I needed to install Windows Installer v 3.1. However, it failed to
install. The Failed icon said I could go to Add and Remove Programs in
Control Panel to remove an update. The update was in there previously, but
is not there now.

I have been all over the Knowledge Base site looking for an answer as to how
get the update to install. I have tried "msiexec.exe /regserver". I have
downloaded "WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe" and tried to install.
Nothing works. If anyone has any ideas as to the problem, please advise.

This is Dave D. I discovered what the problem was.

I found an article on the Microsoft Support web site -
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;555175 "How to
resolve Common 'Windows Installer' Problems". Method 4 stated that "The
Windows Installer service may disabled on the machine." After starting the
service, I was able to apply the update to the Installer. Go figure!
