Go to Start > Run, and type in
net stop wuauserv
Click OK
Navigate to the WINDOWS\Software Distribution folder.
Delete *ALL* folders inside of the Sofware Distribution folder.
Now go back to Start > Run, and type in
net start wuauserv
Click OK
This will flush the Software Distribution folder of all software
controls, downloaded updates, and the Update history that shows on
Windows Update.
This may trigger the yellow icon on the taskbar depending on how
Automatic Updates is set to on the system.
Suggest doing this before revisiting Windows Update ...
Right click My Computer on the Desktop or Start Menu and choose Properties.
Click the Automatic Updates tab
Set AU to " Notify but do not download or install ... "
Click Apply, OK
Open Internet Options in the Control Panel
Click the Security tab
Click the Trusted sites icon and then click the Sites button
Add this to Trusted sites ( MAKE SURE the box next to
" Require server verification (https

.. " is NOT checked )
http://update.microsoft.com
Click the Add button, then click OK
Click Apply if it is available
Now click the Advanced tab
Scroll down to the Security heading
Put a check next to -
Check for publisher's certificate revocation
Check for signatures on downloaded programs
Do not save encrypted pages to disk
Empty Temporary Internet Files when browser is closed
Enable Intergrated Windows Authentication (requires restart)
Use SSL 2.0
Use SSL 3.0
Use TLS 1.0
Warn about invalid site certificates
Warn if forms submittal is being redirected
Click Apply, OK
Since the system has been validated, download -
Update for Windows XP (KB898461)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Save it, do NOT run it from it's present location.
Close IE and then install it.
Now revisit Windows Update.
