Subject: Stuck on Windows Installer Update Version 2 to 3.1
Date: Tuesday, October 24, 2006 4:18 PM

I was forced to reinstall Server 2003 in order to overcome a corrupted
registry. I'm in the process of attempting to install all updates. The
update for Windows Installer 3.1 failed. I was instructed to reboot, after
which the install keeps reaching the same fail/reboot cycle. I'm stuck, and
would really appreciate any advice on how to overcome this.

By the way, I can not remove the update using Add/Remove programs (it's not
listed there).

Thx,

Joe Guerry

Joe,

Best to munge your email addy so that you're not innundated with spam.
See below.
Which update are you trying to remove ? If Windows Installer 3.1 failed,
then there's no need to uninstall it. Check the %windir% for the
presence of $MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$. Open the spuninst folder and
run spuninst.exe if the $MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$ is present.

Suggest an attempt to clean up the files and registry settings left over
from the failed/partially successful installation attempts by running
the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Run it and if any Windows Installer 3.1 is listed, then clean that up.

Download WI 3.1 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
Save it, close the browser, then install it.
