Which update are you trying to remove ? If Windows Installer 3.1 failed,
then there's no need to uninstall it. Check the %windir% for the
presence of $MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$. Open the spuninst folder and
run spuninst.exe if the $MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$ is present.
Suggest an attempt to clean up the files and registry settings left over
from the failed/partially successful installation attempts by running
the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool :

Run it and if any Windows Installer 3.1 is listed, then clean that up.
Download WI 3.1 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
Save it, close the browser, then install it.
