Windows installing unwanted updates

I've got a strange one here. I stopped downloading and installing updates
some time ago because, basically, every time I did, I ended up having to
take my computer to the shop to fix the damage the update caused.

I have Updates set to ask me before downloading or installing them, and up
until now, that worked. Today, I turned on my computer and got the "Do not
turn off your computer while 3 updates are being installed" screen.

Has MS altered updates to install themselves regardless of the settings? Am
I going to have to switch to a Mac to retain control of my computer? Any
information would be appreciated.

Crashed and reverted to a restore point made before you changed
the update behaviour?

Good thought, but no. Aside of IE7 glitching out every once in a while, no
crashes at all. Thanks, though.
