I am installing this same update every day. If I don't tell it to cancel it
wants to install it again and again as soon as it has completed. This is the
update:

Installing Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service
Pack 1 (KB928366) (update 1 of 1)...

I don't know how to get it to stop this particular update. Thanks in
advance for any help offered.

If you go to this update and "hide" it, your problem will go away. Or turn
off auto updates and pick your own. I do not think NET framework 1.1 is even
used any more,

I just started having the same type of problem. Mine is "Security Update for
MS XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181). It updated this on Aug
15, twice yesterday and 7 times today. I turned off Auto Updates, but
shouldn't have to. It is very irritating. And it's doing it to different
extents on all three of my computers! I could understand one getting a
problem, but not all three at once.

Any help in prevention and fixing the problem versus a "turn it off" work
around would be greatly appreciated.

Hi petro12345:

I had the same problem on an XP system. After searching this newsgroup, I
found the following post (pasted below) by a great guy in France. His steps
are easy to follow, and it fixed the issue. His post is from 07-16-2007.

(Also, in case you did not notice, when the yellow updates shield is in the
system tray, the Shut Down Computer dialog box has a link that allows Windows
XP to shut down without attempting to update. I used that link for about
three weeks until Patrick resolved the problem for me because it's a waste of
time waiting for Windows to install an update that you know will be reoffered
after rebooting.)

Cheers,

~ Mark

----------------

This is an old bug showing up again. Although the official solution
involves reinstalling the framework after manipulating the registry with the
installer cleanup tool, there's a much simpler way to fix this:

1. Instead of using Windows Update, download the KB928366 package from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Do not install yet.

2. Download the .Net framework 1.1 redistributable package from here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...7-034d1e7cf3a3

3. Use Winzip or a similar utility to unpack dotnetfx.exe in a folder of
your choice. You should get the following files:
netfx.msi
install.exe
InstMsi.exe
InstMsiW.exe
netfx1.cab

4. Launch the KB928366 installer. It will soon complain that it can find the
installation CD-ROM (don't ask me why). Browse to the folder where you
unpacked the dotnetfx files.

That's it.

This procedure can be applied to any similar situation regarding .Net
framework updates. I'm using it since years (that is, since this Windows
Update bug exists).

Good luck.
