Windows keeps restarting...

Until very recently, my Windows XP Home PC was working fine. I was in the
middle of trying to configure a wireless network (which ain't easy !!). All
drivers/updates were up to date. Then the following day, my wife started used
the PC for a while. Now we cant restart windows. She believes there may have
been an update from Windows.

Firstly, what I would like to know is what have been the recently updates
from Windows?

The nature of the problem is during the start up of windows. i cant even get
into safe mode. it will just hang at a particular device driver...

at first it hung at btkrnl.sys, disable this using the recovery console -
and the rest of the BlueTooth stuff.
then it hung at mup.sys, again disabled this using the recovery console.
now it hangs at ndis.sys (or something like that)...I havent yet disabled
that service yet.

I am not sure, but at the bios start up, i see a new piece of text saying
something about a processor patch id...?

I know the the problems seem disjointed...but I would like some help on this
matter...otherwise - format c: !!!!

kind regards...
marcus.

Marcus,

If the system fails to start/restart in situations such as this, suggest
you try Last Know Good Configuration :

How to start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration
feature in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852

If that doesn't resolve the issue, try System Restore. Roll the system
back to a date just before the issue appeared. If the system will not
start, do so from Safe Mode with Command Prompt :

How to Start the System Restore Tool from a Command Prompt

Hi,

thanks for getting back to me.

I have tried Last Known Good Configuration and Safe mode (debug, command
prompt, network)....nothing works.

In debug mode, windows stops working. At first, it was btkrnl.sys, then
mup.sys, then ndis.sys and now ntfs.sys. Each time, i have disabled the
driver using the recovery console.

Anymore ideas?

much appreciated.

marcus.

I had a similar problem a few months back. It was a hardware problem. The
CPU had gone bad. I replaced and I have had no other problems. Hope this
helps.

I have done that change already. But I have this problem with the router
switched off.

So basically, windows has decided to died on me - but wont tell me why?

What would be REALLY useful is when windows has failed - that it just stops
where it was and displays an error messge. Just how friken useful would that
be..?

format c:
install linux

try replacing the CPU. I believe it is a coincidence with the router. If
win XP will not boot most of the time it is the cache on the CPU. I replaced
mine and have had no other problems.

This doesn't exactly coincide with this thread, but I am desperate for some
help. I have Windows XP, and it will re-boot itself at different times and in
different applications. My brother said it is a known flaw in XP that XP
tries to start too many applications at once, gets confused, and will re-boot
itself. I have taken the PC back to the place that built it for me, and of
course they could not duplicate it. Does anyone have any fixes out there for
me?

Thanks for your time,
Twoee
