I'm actually in the position to test this just right now, but I can tell you it certainly
doesn't scan if there's nothing setup.
However, was it the OneCare scanner that you're given an option to installing the one you
were using?
Regardless, not having a scanner setup in Messenger will block certain functions (like
receiving zips, rars, executables, etc.), so it is recommended that you have at least
something set up to bypass that restriction.
