I take back what I said about Google. I just had to uninstall Google Desktop
on Vista Ultimate. It had a memory leak that was eating up a half a gig of
RAM each day. Then the Outlook search addin was crashing Outlook 2007. While
the feature set and implementation of Google Desktop is superior, I'm back to
the less-than-adequate Windows Search and sidebar. Windows Search is buggy
but not eating memory.
Since this is a forum for Windows Live, I should bring it back around.
Regarding the bundling issue, Google also bundles. Their Desktop package
includes a sidebar, search etc. You have to select the things you don't want
installed. Apple is doing it too with iTunes and QuickTime. I understand
bundling. I guess my issue is that the types of things Windows Live is
bundling things that don't go together. IM and Email are in different domains
and should be delivered separately. Apple bundling iTunes with Quicktime is
completely wrong too partly because they're two completely different things.
I don't need iTunes to use QuickTime. Perhaps bundling LiveWriter with email
makes sense or search with both email and IM makes sense. But putting mail
and IM together seems inappropriate. That's the issue.
