Hi,

Everytime I sign into Windows Live Messenger 2009, I get this message:

"Windows Live Communications Platform has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for teh inconvenience".

The error report gives this:
AppName: wlcomm.exe; AppVer: 14.0.8064.206; ModName: kernel32.dll, ModVer:
5.1.2600.5781; Offset: 00009eda

Messenger will continue to work until I click the close button on the
message then it disconnects. Can anybody help?? I've looked all over and
can't find an answer.

Greetings,

This is the component that handles Messenger's (and the other Windows Live products)
contacts. So if it dies, so does Messenger.

Unfortunately there's a variety of things which can cause this to happen and you really just
have to try everything that applies to you.

First of all, head over to the following folder, and delete the "Windows Live Contacts"
inside it:
\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft

Where username is your Windows username. Additionally, some of these folders will be hidden
by default, to see them simply press the
Alt key on the keyboard in any Windows Explorer window to bring up the toolbar, click Tools,
then Folder Options, then the View tab, and then choose 'Show hidden files and folders'.
After click OK, they should appear with the other folders.

Next, if you're using Windowblinds, you'll need to uninstall that (or at least set it to not
use Wlcomm or Messenger) or simply use the built-in standard Windows themes.

Next, if you're running any sort of anti-virus or internet security software, you should
uninstall it (at least temporarily, to determine if it's part of the problem, you can
reinstall it afterwards).

Finally, part of Nvidia's optional Forceware software (the "Network Access Manager") has been
known to cause problems, you can just uninstall it as well (and use the Windows firewall or
another freeware product if you need one).

If none of that works, you may need to downgrade to 8.5.

Hi Rusty,

If what Jonathan gave you didn't work, try checking this site out.

There were some of steps for other issues where this user got from
Jonathan's posts.

I tried what Jonathan said and that didn't work. Is there a way to do a
clean uninstall completely from my computer and reinstall???? BTW, it used
to work fine...up until a week ago. I think I might have deleted some
windows program and thats when this started...

Hi,

If it worked a week ago, I'd just use System Restore if possible. On XP that can be found by
clicking Start, then Help & Support, then 'Undo changes to my computer using System Restore'.

Hi Jonathon

I tried everything you recommended and it didn't work. After sending several
error reports, I gave up and just installed version 8.5

Hope Microsoft eventually solves this issue because I much prefer the newer
version than the 8.5

forget deleteing your contacts etc these are the causes
You may have an older version of the F-Secure Internet Security software
- The NVIDIA Network Access Manager might be filtering off the Messenger application
- You have malicious software in your computer
- There DLL files in your computer that are in conflict with wlcomm.exe

if like me you have a motherboard with an nvidea chipset then go to control pannel add/remove and remove the nvidea network access manager restart then install messenger.....problem solved!!! deleteing all your contacts will just give you a big headache and solve nothing!!!
