Greetings,
In general "reports" to Microsoft are for statistical data. They do fix things that they
can, but in a lot of cases they can't because it's related to a third-party and unless
they're a direct Microsoft partner, it can be difficult to get the problem dealt with.
Given your description, Messenger is probably getting stuck on a handle that won't clear --
in most cases, this will be a third-party device (webcam, sound driver, etc.). It could also
be third-party tools that are hooking into the Messenger window and holding onto it
(anti-virus software, malware protection, etc.). Although with some crash dump analysis, it
would be easier to determine what might be causing it but unfortunately that isn't really
possible over the newsgroup medium. As such, you might want to unplug unnecessary devices
and completely uninstall any anti-virus and anti-malware software (you can reinstall it
later) to see if that's the problem. And no, just disabling them isn't good enough.
Also, you might want to try out what happens if you use "Safe Mode with Networking" mode in
Windows' startup menu since that would disable a good majority of these things; just to see
if the problem exists there too.
