Hi, Mike.
Windows Live Mail? Or Windows Live HOTmail? There IS a difference!
WLM automatically creates an Inbox for each Mail Account that you create.
And, to MANY users' surprise, it automatically deletes all the mail in that
Inbox when you Remove that Mail Account! (It warns you first, but the
warning is VERY easy to miss.) How many Mail Accounts have you created in
WLM? Click Tools | Accounts... and see how many are listed under Mail. (If
you don't see the Menu Bar, with Tools on it, just press <Alt> to see it
momentarily or <Alt>+M,M to toggle it on/off.)
I've never used Hotmail, but many regulars here have, so if that's what you
are using, just stay tuned. Someone should be along shortly to help you. I
see that IE8 makes it very hard to get to the screen to make anything other
than Hotmail the default mail handler. :>( Since I didn't go that
direction, I'm not sure of the exact steps, but they start in IE8 with Tools
| Internet Options | Programs | Set programs; this gets you to the Default
Programs screen, from where you can choose Set your default programs, which
takes you to still another screen where you can actually choose the "file
types and protocols that [WLM] can open by default". Check your settings
here to see if you have (intentionally or not) told IE8 to use WL Hotmail
rather than WL Mail.

Hotmail is a SERVICE; WLMail is an application on your computer, so you
don't need a URL - except for YOUR email server. Mine is
mail.grandecom.net, but that won't do you any good unless you also are
paying Grande Communications a monthly fee, like I am. Ask your email
provider for the address you need and put that into WLM at Tools | Accounts
| (your mail account) | Properties | Servers.
