You can see the log file referenced in the thread you've linked to as that will provide more
detail as to why it's rolling back.
The "network error occurred" simply means the file is missing and generally happens in these
upgrades as they're forcing the latest photo gallery to be installed as well.
It sounds like there's several problems here. If you just want to avoid all this and to
really see if there's an error stopping the direct installation of Messenger, you can just
download and install Messenger using the MSIs (this is exactly what the installer does).
On an up-to-date Vista installation, all you need to do is download and run two components:

Then install the Communications Platform:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/red...e/contacts.asp
If that works, Messenger should now be accessible on the start menu.
