By default Avast does scan emails.

Also, the originator of the email scanning concept admits that it
is redundant and unnecessary:

To prevent the possibility of Avast's scanning corrupting your mail
account, do the following: Uninstall Avast, then reinstall, but select
'custom' install, which then allows you to unselect installing its
troublesome email scanning module.
