Windows Live Mail and Avast!

Hi Folks,

Can someone please tell me if Avast works with Windows Live Mail. Does
Avast scan the incoming and outgoing emails? I have been using Avast
with WLM for a few months now and I'm confused if Avast scans the
emails. I am using Vista Home Premium on a 64 bit OS.
I would be very appreciative if some one out there who has knowledge of
this and can tell me.
This is my first time on this forum so hopefully you can help me.

By default Avast does scan emails.
For an explanation of why email scanning is not recommended, see

Also, the originator of the email scanning concept admits that it
is redundant and unnecessary:

To prevent the possibility of Avast's scanning corrupting your mail
account, do the following: Uninstall Avast, then reinstall, but select
'custom' install, which then allows you to unselect installing its
troublesome email scanning module.

Hi Gary,

Thank you so much for your answer. It makes so much sense now. I have
read the link you sent and I feel so much better knowing that I'm still
protected. I run a scan on my computer on a daily basis and have never
had a virus so obviously Avast is doing the job. Thank you once again
for your answers and I also know now I can go to this forum for any kind
of help with people like you to answer these questions. Thank you ever
so much.

Avast does work with my WLM v14. But having read Gary's post below I may
just disable that module

I have long installed AV without email scanning. The last time somebody sent
me an email with a virus attached, even the on access, memory resident
scanner missed it, due to the newness of the malware. AV should be
considered a backup to your own sensibility. Even though my AV did not alert
on the attachment, the conditions were suspicious (I did not know the
sender). Your only protection against such a "Zero Day" virus is your own
alertness.

Thank you every one for your replies you have all been wonderful in
helping.
I never open emails if I don't know who the sender is and of course if
I know they are definitly spam as they all go into my Junk folder to be
deleted.
