Doesn't seem to be the answer.

pressing Alt just adds 1,2,3,and 4 and F,H,O,V & S to the existing toolbar
display?

That means you are running the newer beta version which uses a ribbon menu.
What particular command under Tools are you looking for? Many commands
have changed how you access them via the ribbon menu.

Tools/Accounts so as to view details of existing mail and newsgroup accounts
and to add extra mail and newsgroup accounts.

Sorry, my bad - it was late and I didn't notice the 'beta' in your subject line. There are no 'Tools'. The old Options and several
other bits of the old toolbar are now accessed via the no-name tab next to Home. The Mail options apply to newsgroups as well...
The 1, 2, 3, 4, F, H, O, V are 'keyboard accelerators', a fancy name for keyboard shortcuts for those who don't like clicking.

From the main screen click the Accounts button on the upper level
command ribbon. This will enable adding new accounts.

Examining existing accounts is not quite that easy. Click the
unlabeled button on the far left of the main ribbon, then Options,
then E-mail accounts.

The following will sequence through the menu to access the
accounts(and their properties/settings) and
also add/remove accounts.

Windows Mail button/Options/Email accounts
or
Alt F O E

Fyi...the icon for the 'Email accounts'option
(which serves for mail and news accouts add/remove)
can be added to the Quick Access Toolbar.
- to do so right click on 'Email accounts' on the menu

If you only need to access an individual account's settings,
then right click the account in the left hand folder pane
and select properties.

TVM to all...very useful info. John

?Hi, John.

Welcome to the Ribbon! ;^}

Check out the QAT. That's the Quick Access Toolbar. It provides lots of
one-click shortcuts that make the Ribbon system much more usable. Almost
any button on any Ribbon can be added to the QAT. The QAT appears above the
Ribbon by default, but I find it easier to use since I clicked "Show Quick
Access Toolbar below the Ribbon".

To get started with the QAT, just click Home to show the Home Ribbon.
Right-click on Reply to group, then check "Add to Quick Access Toolbar".
Once the QAT appears, right-click any blank spot on it to put it below the
Ribbon.

Now that the QAT is operational, click the "Windows Live Mail" button.
That's the button in the upper left corner, where the "File" button always
used to be. Now it has no name at all - unless you hover your mouse over it
to make the name appear. Maybe we should just call it the WLM button?

Anyhow, click the WLM button, then right-click Options and add it to your
QAT. This eliminates one click and gives you quick access to the drop-down
menu to choose from Mail, NGs, etc. But, most of the time, we really are
looking for the Options menus with tabs for Send, Signatures, etc. So click
the WLM button again, click Options, then right-click on Mail to add that to
QAT. Now, when you click this new icon on the QAT, you'll get the Tools |
Options menu - so you've eliminated a couple of clicks, making it one click
quicker than in Wave 3. ;<)

One caveat: QAT icons get added in the order that you create them and can't
be re-sequenced, although they can be removed. So, after a trial run, you
might want to remove them all and recreate them in the order that you
prefer.
