Windows Live Mail does not import sub-folders from Windows Mail

Hi,

I have recently upgraded my Vista to Windows 7.

I used to use Windoes Mail for my emails on Windows Vista. However, after
the upgrade I have downloaded and installed Windoes Live Mail, and performed
the steps mentioned on the Microsoft Website to import all emails from
Windows Mail to Windoes Live Mail.

The import was successful but I could not any subfolders after the import, I
used to maintain my emails in several sub-folders on Windows Mail, but those
emails are not imported.

I also could not find a way to Launch Windows Mail on Windows 7.

My questions are:

1. Why was it not mentioned in the website that the emails in the sub
folders will not imported? I would not have upgraded to Windows 7 at all. Or
rather why was the folder structure not maintained after the import?

2. Why should Windows 7 stop supporting Windows Mail? I do not understand
the logic, what was wrong with Windows Mail?

And finally and most importantly:

3. How can I migrate all my emails from Windows Mail to Windows Live mail?
or rather I would be happy if some one can tell me how can i run Windows mail
on Windows 7, as I happy using Windows Mail and I dont see a reason why I
should go through all the trouble of using a Windows Live Mail when I dont
really need one?

Thanks.

1. I don't think it is normal for emails in sub-folders to fail being imported.
Try a manual import from within Windows Live Mail: File, Import, Messages,
Windows Mail. If you don't see the File menu, press Alt first.

2. Microsoft stopped developing Windows Mail in July 2006.
Where have you been? :-)
Microsoft decided to support only one free mail client, Windows Live Mail,
which was a better fit for the Windows Live suite of programs.

3. There is a hack to make Windows Mail work in Windows 7:
a. In Win7 rename the C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\ directory to something else.
b. Copy that same-named directory (including its files) from a working Vista
computer and paste it to the Win7 computer.
c. Create a new Mail shortcut from the WinMail.exe file.

d. Then after Windows Mail is installed on Windows 7, apply the two
registry fixes mentioned here:
http://www.sevenforums.com/software/...tml#post309014

Those registry fixes are only needed if you want Windows Mail to handle
all the default mail protocols. The fixes aren't needed to get basic mail
functionality.

Be aware that future Windows Updates may render WM inoperable in
Windows 7, as will running SFC.exe. For that reason I recommend also
installing Windows Live Mail, so you will have an immediate fallback
if WM fails.
