Do you run Windows Blinds?

Fireup IE in With NO ADDONS and then Start Messenger. Any luck?

Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - IE with NO ADDONS

Check IE - TOOLS - Manage Addons

Check your BHO's

Install Prevx 3.0 Home Free (it is compatiable with most antiviral and
antispyware programs - I use Avast Home and stop the unused Shields)
Prevx is very fast and very good.

Check for malware, spyware and virus, 1st as they can cause the issue.
Check with online scanners. Run malwarebytes and superanti-spyware
in scanner mode (non resident).

Be careful, what antivirus are you using? Resident anti-spyware? Temp
disable and check. (unload Messenger, stop the above, restart Messenger)

Of course the video card drivers are always suspect.
