I found a solution to running my old copy of MSN Messanger and not being
forced to upgrade to Windows Live Messanger 8.5 when signing in. I did NOT
find a fix for my original post but I'm happy just to have Messanger running.
Thanks to Stephen Boots, MVP Windows Live for the fix.

Follow this link for 1. if you can't get 8.5 installed on a 64bit machine
AND 2. (what I did) to be able to run an old version without being forced to
update to Windows Live Messanger 8.5.
My original problem seemed to be a common problem from what I've read in
these groups that after updating to 8.5 you get the Message that you can't
sign into the server and to try again later.
