I have the same problem. I have reintalled the app and still the same
problem. If it take my laptop home it works fine. If i log in to a diffrent
laptop in the office it works fine. Not everyone in the office has the same
problem. nothings changed on the network.

I know it cant be the software as it works at home on the same laptop and
same user name.

Update,

I can now log in but i have to have my availability set to appear off-line.
if i change it to any thing else then i just get logged off as it try's to
reconnect.

For what it's worth, the following has solved this same issue with three of
my users. If you have created a custom Group within your Messenger contact
list, copy those contacts (if any) to one of the Default Groups, and delete
the custom Group (this must all be done while signed-in "Offline"), follow
the prompts on the web page verifying you want to leave the Group and delete
it. Sigh-out, then sign back into Windows Live Messenger in "Available" mode
- it should work fine.

I'm still tryng to narrow down what exactly is causing the problem with
these - hopefully someone more skilled at T-shooting this application
(Microsoft) will see this and do some debugging.
