Windows Live Messenger 2009 randomly closing with DEP Error

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 32
I have Windows Live Messenger 2009 (Build 14.0.8089.726)

No matter if I am signed in or not, I am getting repeated DEP error messages
that tells me that Messenger recieved a DEP and is closing and then I get the
dialog that it is looking for a solution that i never finds.

My question is, how do i find out what is causing the DEP errors to occur?

Is it a message coming through my firewall i can block? Is it another
problem (I have AVG Virus Scan running)?

Is there a log or something that will give me more information?

Task Category: (100)
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic

Faulting application msnmsgr.exe, version 14.0.8089.726, time stamp
0x4a6ce533, faulting module PresCamES_10.ax_unloaded, version 0.0.0.0, time

id 0x9e8, application start time 0x01cac56da3dbfbee.

The only change on my system is the presence of a Microsoft LifeCam vx-6000
but this fault occurs if I have the camera plugged in or not and if I am
logged onto Messenger or not.

Any clue? or any way i can slueth this issue any more?

Your problem is most likely related to whatever this PresCamES_10.ax file is from. You'll
need to hunt down the file, look at its properties and see which software it belongs to --
then uninstall it as is attempting to write executable code into Messenger's address space
somehow (DEP is a security feature to protect you after all).

If you need a quick search tool to find it www.voidtools.com is very decent.

If you still can't find it or figure out which software it belongs to, there are other ways
to disable or unregister the file which should fix the problem (but might break other
software).

Thanks for the reply and the tip on the tool. That worked great!

A while back I had a web meeting and they used some softwre from a company
called MegaMeeting.com. It created a folder called ShowMyDesktop and
installed some software called ShowMyDesktop-10fps. That is the folder
where I found the PresCamES_10.ax file.

What sucks is there is NO uninstall that I can find. I did find this

MsiExec.exe /I{D163A387-D07F-4ae0-9E2F-0FC37A604134}

In an Uninstall Key in the registry and it had the publisher and directory.

I have attempted to contact the vendor and if I hear no reply, I am going to
attempt to use the command above.

Anyway, thanks for the reply, that seems to have found my problem. I
absolutely HATE software that acts this way and does not supply and
uninstaller. It might as well be spam or a virus.

Also ****es me off that is somehow always is starting up and trying to do
something

Hi Enzo,

Since it's .ax, I assume it's some sort of codec they must use to capture/transmit the
screen. Messenger does enumerate through the audio/video devices when it starts, so this may
be part of the reason why it was being loaded.

I have to admit I've not actually used this particular meeting software before. I have gone
through WebEx, Microsoft Live Meeting and GoToMeeting and most certainly prefer GoToMeeting
(for a variety of reasons I won't bore you with). The others are alright, but they have
their quirks. I've not compared the pricing, so I'm not sure which is cheapest though.

Yep, all fixed now!

I renamed the file that was throwing the fault and now everything works as
before. The company that create that .ax files has yet to respond to any of
my emails. I did not want to run the uninstall line just in case it would
screw something else up, so the rename is good enough for me.

Thanks again for the help.

As an FYI, check out TeamViewer sometime. I believe it is a great remote
access piece of software that I use all the time and it is rock solid.

Hi,

Seems like a reasonable fix to me.

I've been meaning to give TeamViewer a shot, but haven't felt compelled. I'll get around to
it one of these days ;p
