You don't need a Hotmail account. You need a Windows Live ID (which was
formerly known as a Passport account). A Hotmail account can be used as
your Windows Live ID. If you install Windows Live Messenger, there is a
link in the program to obtain a Windows Live ID if you don't already have
one. If you can log into Windows Live Messenger, you already have a Windows
Live ID.
