....when I sign out and back in again.

when I try to change my avatar, it changes ok, but when I sign out and sign
in again, it changes back to what it was before.

I have checked the settings under options and I have it set to allow others
to view my picture, and have unticked the box under security stating whether
it's a shared computer or not. I have also checked/unchecked the "use the
same display picture..." option under general preferences too, but to no avail

I am using Windows Messenger V8.5. and windows XP SP3, though the issue had
been happening ever since I installed Windows Live Messenger.

this problem is annoying me as I want to change my display picture, and am
fed up of doing so every time I sign in

Hi Surebrec,

Which version of Windows XP are you running with Windows XP SP3? Home
Edition? Professional Edition? Media Edition?

Hi Surebrec,

Go into your Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the following:

Windows Live installer
Windows Live Messenger
Windows Live Sign-in Assistant

Reboot the computer. Use Explore and clean out your \Temp Folders in
your User IDs and Windows\Temp. Run Disk Cleanup and then go to :
http://get.live.com/messenger/overview and download and save a fresh copy of
the Installer, before you run it.

Hello again.

ok, I followed each step carefully, uninstalled everything you mentioned,
rebooted the deleted the contents of the temp folders you said, then
downloaded the installer and then installed it.

the problem is still there though, no matter what picture I choose, it
always reverts back to the one I had on to start with when I log in the next
time.

this problem is beginning to frustrate me, is there nothing else that could
be causing it?

Hi Surebrec,

Try changing your display picture, not from the Main Window, but from a
Conversation Window and see what happens.

Hi Surebrec,

Delete the old picture and see what happens. Log out and log back in.

blank.

Hi Surebrec,

Then you need to uninstall Windows Live again. Repeat for the other
programs associated with it.

Go to http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/ and download the
Trial version of TuneUp Utilities 2008. Install it and reboot the computer.
Run its Registry Cleaner. Reboot and reinstall Windows Live Messenger again.

See what happens.
