Hello. Since last friday, my Windows Live Messenger 2009 on Windows 7
Professional 32bit started to crash whenever I click on any contact on my
contact list in order to start a new conversation. I tried to uninstall and
reinstall Messenger and the whole Live Essentials platform with no success.
Here's a detailed log from the Event Viewer:

As you can see I omitted the computer name since it's my business laptop and
contains the full domain name too. However I don't think it's relevant to the
solution of the problem.

Thanks for the help you'll provide.

Greetings Lorthirk,

When you see something like this (the UI/UX code is crashing), generally it'll be another
application hooking to the window or something similar. So we're talking security software,
emoticon toolbars, that sort of thing. Usually debugging these can be a tad hard, but not
impossible.

However, since you know when the problem occurred, you could just use System Restore to
determine what's happened to the system since, or even use System Restore and just restore
back to last Friday.

If there's issues with that, you can also use the Programs and Features applet in the Control
Panel and sort by Installed On column to determine what's been installed. Additionally, you
can see if it's a per account problem by making a new Windows account and testing Messenger
there, or even just shut down all third-party applications running in Task Manager's Process
tab and try Messenger after that.

Hi Jonathan,

First of all, thanks: it's good that finally someone is taking care of my
problems (I even tweeted you days before

I have to admit one thing, thought: that "last friday" was referring to the
original date of the message that I sent to the Microsoft Tech Support that I
copied and pasted here. So now it translates on "some of weeks ago" (I
noticed the problem on January 22 if I remember correctly). Unfortunately I
haven't a system restore point this far, only starting from January 25. I
have nothing installed but Windows Live Messenger and, now, MSN Plus but I
can assure you I have uninstalled this and that many times, and the problem
definitely occures even with a fresh installation of Windows Live Messenger.
The only thing I installed on Jan 22 was Skype (since I couldn't manage to
get a video conference working with WLM), but I even tried uninstalling it
and it didn't fix anything. Moreover, I created a new account on my PC just
to test the thing. Guess what? Crashes with this account too.
Please, I'd really love to use my regular WLM.

Hi Guys,

I was having the same problem on Vista 64 for a long time, and after
Reading the post from Jonathan Kay, I had the idea to attach a debugger
to the crash and check which modules were loaded in the process.
As suggested by Jonathan, a hook had been loaded just before the crash
occured, from TortoiseCVS.
I uninstalled TortoiseCVS, and now it works.

A quick search on the internet pointed me to the following bug report
in the tortoise database

'SourceForge.net: TortoiseCVS: Detail: 2834625 - Tortoise CVS crashes
Windows Live Messenger on Vista/7'

one of the comment says it would be fixed in TortoiseCVS-1.12.1-RC4 ...

Hope it will help.

-Reginald

Regman, I'll never thank you enough. TortoiseCVS was indeed to blame. I
uninstalled it and everything went ok.

Thnaks, thanks, thanks. Thanks.

Did I say it? Thanks.

Hi,

CVS? Come on guys, SVN is way better
Also, TortoiseSVN doesn't crash Messenger (at least not that I've knowingly noticed).

Feel free to tell this to my boss
I know that SVN is better, but a project took of on my organization and they
choosed CVS, reason unknown to me. But I have to adapt myself.
