Windows Live Messenger freezes after sign in

As soon as I sign in to my account, the program freezes and must be
forcefully ended. Sometimes it will become usable, but only after leaving it
for several minutes. This is a most annoying glitch and I would appreciate
any help on alleviating it. I really like the new Messenger, but I will be
forced to use Gaim if these problems continue.

Greetings,

One solution for this is if you've had the debug log file on and its grown too big. To
correct, go to your My Documents\My Received Folder and if you have a MsnMsgr.txt file,
delete it and then try signing in. If this works, be sure to click the Tools menu, then
Options, Connection category, then Advanced Settings button, and uncheck the box under
'Connection Logging'.

If that didn't help the problem, you could try completely removing your contact cache store.

To do so, shut down Messenger, then clicking Start, then
Run, type:
%appdata%\Microsoft

Right-click the MSN Messenger folder and choose Delete. Then restart Messenger and see if
the problem has been corrected.

Finally, if you're still experiencing the problem and you're using a router in your network
configuration, you might want see if there is a firmware updates available for your
particular router model from the manufacturer.

Funnily enough, this was happening to me (about a min freeze), but your
second advice (deleting the contact cache) worked perfectly!

It also (hopefully) seems to have solved my problem of getting a "1 has
signed out" toast when using Messenger Plus! Live with Windows Live
Messenger (the right person's name seems to have popped up), but will keep
on monitoring this to see if it really has solved the problem.

Unfortuately, I lost a lot of background, winks and contact picture stuff,
but most of them were rubbish anyway. Is there anyway of verifying any of
this cache stuff before deleting them (apart from guessing the info from the
folder name)?

Greetings,

That problem is because you're running an older version of Messenger Plus Live which doesn't
support Yahoo interrop. Just install the latest version:

I have (4.01.0.240)... and still have the issue. It also doesn't happen
with Yahoo! contacts either (happens, not always, with any contacts in my
list).

Funnily enough, it seems that it happens even with the latest build

Hi,

Yes, after yesterday's release, it's the latest build of Windows Live Messenger that's doing
it. You'll have to wait for the next Plus update.

Not for me as it was doing it on the last Windows Live Messenger build
(8.0.0792.00) as well. In fact, the thread I pointed out earlier shows that
too (there are posts from July).

No matter, as you say, I'll just wait for the next Messenger Plus! Live
update, hopefully they will corrected the problem.

Hi. I am having the same freeze problem and i've tried all 3 methods but it
doesn't work. It freezes when i just sign in, which has to be terminated
forcefully. Also, on some occasions (by chance i guess) that i am able to get
past that stage, the messenger will freeze for around 20s at intervals of
maybe a few minutes. I would really appreciate for any solutions given.
Thanks.

I'm having the *EXACT* same problem as you, Valentine.

None of these fixes are working. This is ridiculous. Thanks a lot MSN. As
always, you're amazing.

Can we get a legit fix here, please?!

Dave
