I recently heard this discussed (not that it's coming, just the idea), so you're certainly
not the only one requesting this.
Considering the Lite idea has been done at one time or another by the other IM players, I
certainly wouldn't discount for this future.
However, are you aware of the existence of Windows Messenger? It is a pretty light-weight
client:
