Windows Live Messenger not disconnecting

I am currently running windows live messenger V8.0 (Build 8.0.0812.00) and
I've been told that after I've disconnected my session the person who I'd
been talk to still sees me online (active) many minutes after I've
disconnected (I've even powered down my laptop and I'm told I'm still seen as
online by the person I've finished chatting to).

Has anyone encountered this problem before as I would appreciate some
explanation as to why it happens?

Greetings,

The default timeout value is 5 minutes (I admit this value may have changed in the last
server revisions and my information may be out of date), so depending on where you are in its
check, it could take up to that long.

If you've simply suspended your laptop or something similar, the server will wait for you to
timeout before it will you as offline (if you don't purposely choose the Sign Out option).
