I just upgraded to Ultimate and now some of my programs, for instance Windows
Live Messenger, are not in their correct display resollutions - my screen is
set to 1440 x 900, yet if i open messenger it is in something below 1024 x 768

why is this happening and how to stop it?

I have no idea what you are talking about. The display resolution is the
screen real estate that you see. It is hardware controlled. You can NOT have
two different resolutions for two different programs at the same time.

Now, can you give another try and better articulate what your problem is?

Like I said - my screen is set in prefences to 1440 x900

yet if i open Google earth i get an error message saying tha my screen
resolution is too low. set to below 1024 x 768

my other programs work in perfect reolution, yet Windows live messenger
opens as if it is being displayed in a lower resolution. I cannot explain it
any other way - it is larger than it should be out of focus and blurred.

so this is what i want to stop happening - why do these programs seem to be
detecting a diffeerent setting from that set in the preferences - i do not
know any other way of saying it

Please clarify what you are asking. What you say makes no sense.

A program doesn't display at a particular resolution. It's your entire
display that a resolution applies to. If your display is set to
1440x900, then *everything* on that display displays at 1440x900.
