Windows Live Messenger in Windows Vista - Invalid IP Address

In the last few days, messenger hasn't been able to sign in because it says
there is an invalid IP Address. I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled
windows live messenger, and still it isn't able to sign in. I have switched
between connecting using Dial-up and wireless modems (incase the IP problem
may have been related to using Dial up) and the troubleshooter still states
that there is an Invalid IP Address. What can I do to get Messenger working
again?

Greetings,

By "wireless modem", do you mean one of the 3G/cellular/WiMax dongles?

To be honest, I'm not entirely convinced this is the problem why you can't sign in, the
troubleshooter is known for making issues out of problems that aren't really problems. That
said, it would interesting to known which error code you're seeing when you try to sign in.
You can find this by clicking the "Show details" button in the "We can't sign you in.."
window.

Finally, since this was working until just now, assuming your configuration has not knowingly
changed, you could just try to use System Restore. To do so, click Start, then All Programs,
then Accessories, then System Tools and then System Restore.

I am experiencing the same problem.

I can use my messenger when connected via cable or wireless, but with my
Telus 3G (Compass 597) then I can't sign in. If I set messenger to sign in
with Appear Offline then I'm ok and stay connected. I can make contact with
people can chat, but once I switch to online then I get kicked out. It's not
the installation or Windows 7 as otherwise (not the 3G) then it works without
any problem.

Seems to be one of those problems in the grey zone where both say it's the
other. Any ideas would be helpful. It would seem to be something about
routing or the IPv4 or IPv6 issue maybe and how it gets handled by the 3G
connection.

Troublshooter shows Invalid IP, but repair says it's fixed... only to show
invalid again afterwards... a loop.

Hi Brian,

Interesting, on the plus side, at least there's a pattern to these.

Could you maybe post an ipconfig /all output (obfuscate what you wish, although I doubt
there's anything terribly private there)?

As a side note, in most cases, the "Repair" option in the troubleshooter does nothing but try
again (AFAIK).

I'm having the same problem, but only when i'm connected from a isolated area! If i'm staying town, connection with WLM works perfectly. As soon as I'm trying to connect from my job place, which is about 35km far from the nearest town, i just can't use WLM at least 75% of the tries i'm making. It seems to be worst trying to connect at night, from 5pm to 11pm. I can use web, facebook, hotmail, professional server, any website i want to.. I can use limewire if I want to! Only WLM keeps on disconnecting! Anyone knows how to fix it
