I tried downloading and installing the newer version of Messenger, Windows
Live Messenger. When I ran the .exe, I received a Windows pop-up message:

"Windows Live Messenger setup has failed with error code: '1601'. Please go
to the Windows Live Messenger website http://messenger.live.com to download
the latest version of Windows Live Messenger."

That was where I got the download in the first place. Can anyone assist me
on this error code?
Thanks.

Greetings Kyli,

This usually means there's a problem with the Windows Installer service.

To attempt to correct this, click Start, then Run, and type the following:
%systemroot%\system32\msiexec.exe /regserver
then click OK.

Then try again.

Jonathan, I did what you said to do, and I still get the same message.
Windows Installer has been weird for a while, and I have not found anything
to help me out with it. I am not able to install almost everything. Can you
please help me?
