I have 2 windows live accounts that I use to seperate the contacts in the
windows live mail. Is there any way to make one of these the default when I
sign in to mail. It seems the last one used is picked up on a new signon.

You don't have to "sign in" to Windows Live Mail. But, if you do, Windows
Live Mail uses the Windows Live ID for a specific set of contacts.
Whichever, of multiple, Windows Live IDs you set up automatically is the
default used by WLM. You must manually change the Windows Live ID by
selecting, "Sign in with a different ID ..." from the menu bar, where your
currently signed in ID is shown.

You do not need two Live ID to have two sets of contacts. You can use the
not signed in contacts as one set.
If are signed in, just sign out. If you are not signed in, just sign in.

You are not signing in to mail. You are singing in to Live services.

Ed,
Like you I've more than one Live ID with its associated(but mostly different) contacts for use in Windows Live Mail.

All versions of Windows Live Mail, include the Windows Live Sign In Assistant which permits one to auto sign on with a given Live ID(remember username/password) or select an alternate Live ID(if username/pw is not set to remember).

WLM does not provide the option to make one the default Live ID sign on if a subsequent different Live ID is used to sign on.

WLM does have the ability to switch Live ID's(sign on with another Live ID) from within the WLM program(click on the down arrow under your picture or name located in the upper right)

Optionally, one can choose to create and manage contacts in WLM's 'No Sign On' mode. Unfortunately, in that mode, your contacts will not be stored online..thus a backup plan for contact archiving/insurance should be in place(e.g export to cave). The other benefit of using a Live ID's contacts..exporting/importing contacts via a cave file does not retain categories(formerly called groups in OE, Windows Mail)

One can operate in whatever mode they prefer..but imo, if one is going to spend the time of creating categories and at some future point in time need to change pcs, clean install WLM, upgrade from XP to Windows 7, etc and inevitably import contacts from a csv file(less categories) the use of a Live ID is a no brainer(just sign on with that Live ID and all contacts and **categories** are present)
