Windows live won't run with Vista

When I try to run Windows Live Messenger it stops working before I get a
chance to enter my password.

I had this problem last year. I think I was recommended to download the
latest version of windows or Vista. Whatever I did it worked then.

Unfortunately my hard disk failed. When it was replaced I had to install
Windows Vista Home again from the CD. Now I have the same problem with
Messenger - it won't work. It wont run and says something about a DEP
error. There is no error number.

I tried logging the problem with microsoft. The guy who e-mailed me back
referred me to some "thread" which recommended either downloading something
to change the PC registry or disabling DEP.

I'm not very technical and do not want to do something that might cause an
even bigger problem with my PC.

I am assuming DEP is there for a good reason and I don't know what other
problems I may cause by disabling it.

Any ideas on what I should do next.

Greetings pip,

Are you using an Acer computer by any chance? If so, uninstall Acer eDataSecurity as it's
known to case such problems.

Hi Jonathon,

Yes I'm using an Acer. If I uninstall Acer eDataSecurity will I be leaving
myself open to other problems. What is eDataSecurity for?

Regards,

Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,

No, it's just a piece of value-add encryption software which you're not using (or else you
would know what it is).

There was an update on the Acer site at one time to update the eDataSecurity software to fix
this bug but it's disappeared and doesn't appear to be available anymore.

Hi Jonathan,

I found a link on the Acer site for Vista Support under support &downloads.
I downloaded a patch to solve the problem. It didn't work but it allowed be
to disable eSecurity. Which now causes an annoying message to keep popping
up when I logon.

I'm bringing my PC back to the retailer today and they will sort out any
remaining issues.

Thank you for your help and advice.

Kind regards,

Elizabeth
