Windows LM in business

We're being asked by management to trial some messanger application for use
in the office (as a trial it will be used between heads of depts)

We have many reservations about this, more so in relation to a company wide
roll out which this trial could well lead too.

Just wondering if there is any way we can control how this is used.

Few questions:
Can we create a closed group of contacts so only people in the group can
contact each other?
(There are a lot of people in this company, its guaranteed if this is
rolled out people will spend more time messanging friends/ relatives than
collegues!)

Can we limit some of the features of LM?
(We have many methods of file sharing available to us, we dont really
want to add another)

Can anyone suggest an alternative, more manageable app for IM within a
company? Preferably free but at a minimum free for this trial period.

TIA for any help
gr
