Windows locks during Windows Update.

Brand new machine, PIV 3.4. Windows XP Pro SP2. 1G mem. If Aut-Update is
enabled, machine locks within seconds of logon. If updates disabled, all OK.
With a new installation, this occurs on the second or third initial logon to
internet, and every time therafter. All hardware tests OK. This happens
with/without firewall, with/without AV running. Radeon 9200 vid 256M. Also
happens within moments of starting scan at Windows Update Site. With
Auto-Updates off. Very frustrating. Computer 1 week old. NO OTHER PROBLEMS.
Use MSN isp.

I'm having troubles with my radeon 9200 too, it's locking up all the time. i
suspect it's that and not the other parts of your new machine. i am growing
tired of ati, the maker of radeon, as it's not stable. i just wasted $40 on
a card but it sounds like you've got more invested. go to ati.com too to
make sure you have the latest drivers. hope that helps.

I am sorry you are running into this issue. Yes, for triaging this issue,
please turn off Automatic Updates while patching your new machine.

When I say turn off Automatic Updates, I mean the one in the System, not the
service that runs in the Services window.

Try to scan, discover, download and install a single update, install it, reboot
if necessary, and repeat this pattern until the machine is fully patched. Then,
turn on the Automatic Updates again and let us know where you are with this.
