Windows mail and setting read flags takes forever

I use ctrl-shift-a to mark messages read but it takes forever to set the
flags and the program isn't usable until the flags are set. What is the
delay and how can I avoid it?

I had one unread message and it took 10 seconds to set the flags and I have
deleted all bodies? What else can I do? Hate Thunderbird though.
