Windows Mail challenges

I just bought WindowsVista, and am trying to get used to Windows Mail.
My contact list currently has two sections, both containing addresse
A-Z. How can I amalgamate them into one list
Also, when I click on 'send & receive' why does the program go throug
sent messages, deleted messages, ...... before accessing the inbox
