Windows Mail doesn't get my mail after the first time

Windows mail successfully looks for and loads all mail when first launched
but after that all attempts produce errors. I have to delete the program
and reload each time to check for new mail. Why might that be please?

The check for new mail box is ticked by the way. And the Send/Receive
button produces - the same result - all tasks failed.

Help please !!

What do you mean by "delete the program"? Windows Mail can't
be deleted. Perhaps you meant, close the program.

Do you get an error message? If so, right-click on your error message,
copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

Also, Which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause problems with
Windows Mail over time.

Gary,
Yes I do mean close the Windows Mail program, not delete. I have to close
and reopen in order to successfully receive new mails. I can send mails ok
at all times even after unsuccessful attempts to receive mails, so the
network connection is still good. If I 'send/receive' then I get a panel
that says "Erreurs lors des tâches demandées. Pour plus d'informations,
consultez la liste d'erreurs ci-dessous". (My Vista is in French !) The
errors panel in the tab is however empty. The tasks tab shows my 9 tasks
but with status column blank and Connection column saying 'Réseau local'.

I use Mcafee anti-virus.

I have used Windows mail for 18 months without trouble, and suddenly it no
longer works properly.

Antivirus programs often update themselves, so that can introduce problems
that did not exist previously, and sometimes updates to Windows from
Microsoft causes problems for antivirus programs.

I think Gary will ask if the email scanning option of McAfee is installed.
If it is then reply to tell us it is and someone will explain how to
uninstall it as needed. You can (should) at least disable email scanning but
that is not always enough; you might need to uninstall and re-install
McAfee.

McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Sometimes it takes a while before symptoms start showing up.
First of all, turn off email scanning in McAfee, although that is seldom sufficient.

If the problem continues, the only way you can prove or disprove that
McAfee is the culprit is to uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
If you decide to replace McAfee, we can recommend a free antivirus
program which is more compatible with Windows Mail:

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of overly intrusive antivirus products: http://download.live.com/wlmail

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:

I understand what you both have said. However, mail is always received
correctly when Windows mail is first loaded. Also, I have two other
computers, one running Vista and Windows Mail and another XP and Outlook
Express. Both of these run McAfee and show no signs of this problem. Mail
is still received correctly. So I find it difficult to believe that McAfee
is the issue.

Is the option "Leave messages on the server" enabled for all Mail Clients on
all 3 computers?

Based on many years of providing this type of tech support I've given you
my best analysis of what I think the problem is. If you choose not to
accept it, that's your prerogative. I have no other suggestions.

Using that logic, Windows Mail is not the problem either and therefore this
is not the newsgroup to use to get help with the problem.
