Windows mail keeps trying to compact the the files when I close the program.
It keeps trying and I get errors. How is this fixed? It's the most annoying
thing as it doesn't
quit, if I click OK - I get another error. How do I get it to compact the
news/mail
files? Never had this problem with OE

I used this www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/ to compact and repair the database - it
said it compressed it, but did not. WMail is still trying to compess the
data base every time I close the program. How is this fixed once and for
all? I'm also getting a little window pop up from the bottom bar saying
"Data Execution Prevention closed Windows?"
What the hell is "Data Execution Prevention?"

I am NOT an expert but this happened to me not long ago - this is how I
fixed it.

This is a problem with a max size being reached.
It happened to me when I had a large database (>4Gb) of news articles
across 25+ newsgropups.
Mostly binaries.

Quick fix is to delete stuff, then try and keep your newsbase to moderate
limits.

I would;
Make a news filter to delete posts after 1 or 2 days. (Apply it!)
Be ruthless, if you need to keep posts, archive them, copy them somwwhere
outside winmail.
Decrease number of binary newsgroups subscribed to.
Right-click on each newsgroup in your folders pane, you should be able to go
to 'properties' and see how many articles are in your database.
Select 'Local File' where you can remove message bodies, delete or reset
each newsgroup. I would delete.

If all this hasn't cleared out enough...
Find your news folder;
c:/users/yourname/AppData/Local/Microsoft/WindowsMail (You may have to 'show
hidden files and folders')

You should see a folder for your news account, containing a folder for each
newsgroup you sub to.
Hover your mouse over each to check for any biggies. You can safely delete
the contents of these.

HTH

I'm not subscribed to any.

OK, did that.

There is no "WindowsMail" after c:/users/myname/AppData/Local/Microsoft
..... ? Where is WindowsMail in Vista Home Premium?

It's not there. Where else would it be?

OK, found it using Agent Ransack. Will get back to you if it works or not.

It only worked until I closed the program a few times. It wants to compact
empty folders.

Data Execution Prevention is a security feature in Windows that prevents the
files it monitors from running if they could damage the computer. That would
include corrupted files or malware (details in Help and Support). The
default settings for DEP only includes essential Windows programs and
services.

As I understand it, Windows Mail stores messages as individual email/news
files rather than using the database format that OE used. You might have one
or more corrupted files causing the compression process to fail. If you
know which folder the compression routine is working on when the error
occurs that could narrow down the problem area. Other than that you could
try exporting the emails from each folder one at a time to a backup folder,
delete the original folder contents and try running compression again to see
if it still has the error.
