I think this is a bug, but here's the work around:
Always turn off "Show Only My Messages" when exiting a newsgroup. (Ctrl-H)
When entering a newsgroup don't turn on "Show Only My Messages" (Ctrl-H)
until the Status Bar stops giving messages about updating information.
