Windows Mail Sloooww

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is Vista or Windows Mail problem. Windows
Mail on my laptop is extremely slow. It will spend up to half a
minute "setting flags." The equivalent operation on my XP desktop
with Outlook Express takes less than a second.

I am running Vista Premium on a Compaq F572 (1.7GHz Athlon).

Do you have your anti virus checking incoming and outgoing mail? If so,
disable it as it provides no extra protection and can cause problems
like you're experiencing.

No question about it. On my end my laptop with OE is very fast for newsgroup
reading (I use Outlook for email and calendar) and on my Vista machine
Windows Mail for newsreading is very slow in all actions. If I could run OE
on my Vista box I'd switch in a heartbeat. Will be curious to see if Windows
Mail is improved in Windows 7.

1.Clear the (IE) temporary Internet files and the history cache.
Click Start==>Run... then type (or copy/paste) "inetcpl.cpl" (w/out
quotation marks) into the box, then click the 'OK' button.
In Internet Properties panel 'General' tab, under 'Browsing history', click
'Delete...'button, in 'Delete Browsing History' panel, click the 'Delete
all...'button then place a checkmark into the box beside 'Also delete files
and settings stored by add-ons', Click 'Yes' and exit the Internet
Properties panel by clicking the 'OK' button.

Windows Mail is already a dead end. MS has moved on to Windows LIve
Mail. If you do not have a lot of email accounts you may want to try
it out (If you do have a lot, it sucks).

Same deal...Windows Live Mail performs about the same and has some beta
issues with fonts and stuff right now.

Despite its name it works with Windows Mail and Vista. I run it daily to
[Clear Outbox] [Clean Blank Files] and [Compact Database]. I have only used
the [Repair Database] function once and it did no damage, but caution is
advised for that one.
Over the years I have tried Outlook, The Bat, Thunderbird, Eudora and
Pegasus all of which are OK but Outlook Express/Windows Mail is the one I
prefer. I briefly tried Windows Live Mail and couldn't get it to work or
understand its mindset, whereas Windows Mail does everything I want just
about perfectly. Just my luck that MSoft want to get rid of it!

From the OP:

On a whim I tried the same newsgroups on a paid service rather than
my ISP. For setting flags the times were ...

rec.woodworking - 6 sec vs. 66 sec
sci.electronics.design - 2 sec vs. 80 sec

This is a huge reduction just by going to the paid server. Download
time also decreased with the paid server but they were not much
problem to begin with.

I can understand why download times would depend on the source
but I'd assumed that flags were set locally. Interesting.
