TaurArian helped me fix the windows update issue, and all needed updates
downloaded and installed OK, and with automatic updates enabled, the Windows
Malicious Software Removel Tool - May 2007 keeps showing as a needed update.
I keep downloading and installing, but it keeps showing up. How do I stop it,
and ensure it stops showing as a needed update?

PA Bear,

Thank you for reply. I'll try it tonight when I get home from work. Again,
appreciate the advice.

Well, PA Bear, I tried the manual download, but it did not solve the problem.
Any other suggestions? The update history in "Microsoft updates" page shows I
have successfully updated with the May 2007 version of KB890830 about 9 times
so far. Yet, my automatic updating keeps sending notifications to download
and install (little yellow emblem in system tray).

....to download/install the MSRT or another update?

Have you tried installing it in Safe Mode? (When you install it, it just
runs; if nothing's found, it just goes away leaving no traces; if
something's found, believe me, you'll know about it!)

What does windowsupdate.log have to say about the MSRT? Check
windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors associated with
the [previous] downloads/installs.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

PA Bear,

Thanks for info. I will try your suggestions tonight when I get home, and
will inform you if they are successful. Thanks again for your advice. This
seems to be a common problem....I did a search of this community for MSRT
errors and found a lot of posts from folks having same problem, but no clear
solutions listed.

I'm not familiar with this problem, but it might be relevant to report what
anti-malware applications are active in the PC when this happens. They
might be interfering with the process by which MSRT remembers that it has
run successfully, or maybe MSRT did not run successfully, so it is scheduled
to try again.

You might also get a clue as to what the problem might be by looking in
these log files:
C:\WINDOWS\Debug\mrt.log
C:\WINDOWS\Debug\mrteng.log

Dear Robin,

Thank you for the suggestions. I will try the debug log files you suggest
this evening upon my return home from work. The PC is running Windows XP Home
version, updated thru SP2, had Symantec Security package ( firewall, a/v,
spyware, etc) running for 2 years until I got tired of annual fee, and is now
running the McAfee security system (firewall, a/v, spyware, anti-phishing,
etc) that comes free of charge with AOL membership. This is my daughter's PC
(Dell Dimension 3000). I removed the Symantec system before I loaded the
AOL/McAfee system, but I have noticed that McAfee still reports a Norton Worm
Removal Tool remains that is functioning like a second firewall. I've ignored
this notice since I can't find any trace of that tool remaining on the system
(maybe I haven't looked in the right place or don't know how to search for
this). Anyway, I'll report back on what results I get with the suggestions
you make. Thanks,
-Rob

It can sometimes be difficult to remove all traces of Norton/Symantec
installations from a PC. This sounds like a case for the official Norton
Removal Tool which you can download from:
