Windows ME and failed Internet Explorer 6 SP1 update-Please help!

I have read most of the submissions and replies on this problem, and have
done just about everything suggested in the Win ME forum, as well as in Win
Updates forum, such as:

Redownload IE 6 SP1 files
Attempt to reinstall SP1 without Norton Antivirus (Systemworks 2003) and
Zone Alarm (v. 5.1.033.000)
Try to install in the various ways possible: new installation (basic vs
complete) and continuing a failed installation...

And always the same result: IE 6 SP1 does not install and states a reboot
is required for a previous installation to complete. The loop then
continues.

I am currently running Win ME with IE v. 5.50. The same installation in my
other PC, with Win XP, did not run into any difficulties. I use this PC for
basic office documents (MS Office Pro 2000), so no other software is
installed. I connect to the Internet via a two-PC network with my Win XP PC.

Has anyone found out what to do? Does this mean that ME is incompatible
with IE 6 SP1, and that I am forced to upgrade? I have further read that
getting the CD-ROM with the upgrade does not do the trck, either. Please
help!

I am experiencing something similar. I am unable to install IE6 SP1 on
windows ME. In my case, I don't get any message but the install does not
happen.

While the symptoms don't exactly match, suggest you follow the steps in the
"Resolution" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;318949.

Angel,

This MSKB article specifically mentions Norton :
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309314
Error message : " A previous installation has pending work requiring
a reboot. You need to restart your computer to complete that
installation before running internet explorer setup. Setup will now
close."

Resolution :
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
3. Click the General tab.
4. Click to clear each check box except Load Static VxDs.
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
6. When prompted, restart your computer.
7. Restart Internet Explorer Setup.

Did you download the entire setup package ( around 77MB ) or just
the stub installer ? The stub installer downloads the setup package
when you're online. It is likely that Norton interfered with IE's
installation.
IF you've downloaded the entire setup package advise you to boot to
Safe Mode and install it from there.

Another thing you could try is creating a new folder in My Documents
and name it IEBak. Go to Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall
Information and move all of the files from there to IEBak. DO NOT
DELETE the Uninstall Information folder.
Now try install IE6 SP1 with Norton temporarily disabled.
AutoProtect and the Script Blocking component MUST be temp disabled,
also.
IF IE installs , delete IEBak and the files it contains.
IF it does not, move all of the files back to Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Uninstall Information and delete IEBak.

Dear MowGreen [MVP],

Thanks for the collaboration, and for the netiquette tip. I have carefully
followed the instructions in your message, the same as in KB 309314 (boot
with just Load Static VxDs). Still failed SP1 installation.

I then deleted the update file I had downloaded from Windows Update and
obtained a new one from MS Downloads. Running this new file, bypassing the
startup files or in Safe Mode, still yields the same result = failed SP1
installation.

I checked, just in case, and it is still running MSIE version 5.50.

By the way, I have carefully checked my directories, and cannot find Program
Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information in Win ME. Your idea does
sound logical, but I would either have to delete the complete Program
Files\Internet Explorer--but Win Me does not allow this, or move it
elsewhere, but Win ME follows the files upon execution. Any more suggestions?

Run

SCANREG /FIX

from a DOS prompt or the Start|Run dialog
Windows will Reboot
after the reboot, check for the existence of a WININIT.INI file - if it
exists, post the contents here, and rename it to WININIT.JNK - then try the
update.

Thanks for the help. I ran the scanreg /fix; after boot up, I could not find
any wininit.ini files, so proceeded to install IE6 from Windows Update Files,
but it again failed.

I then ran msconfig and loaded only Static VxDs; I then ran again the
scanreg /fix; on boot up, started Win ME in Safe Mode. Still no wininit.ini
files, and again, running IE6 from Windows Update Files failed to install IE6
once again.

I forgot to mention earlier I also have Norton SystemWorks 2003 installed,
including the antivirus. Safe Mode installation disables NAV, as well as
anything else not basic to Win ME, so this should not have been an issue.

I continue at a loss as to what to do.

Thanks again.
