windows me and internet explorer update

according to the windows update page, it is saying I have successfully
installed internet explorer 6. But when I am on a web page it is saying I
have an older version of ie and have to update and sends me to the update
page. I have tried this several times.
Why is it not acknowledging the update?

Open Internet Explorer.
On the Menu Bar at the top, click on Help > About Internet Explorer.
Post the Version: number into your reply, please.

Ah ... so IE 6 is not installed then. Let's try this first;
open Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs.
Is Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools listed ?
If yes, click on it once to highlight it, then click the Add/Remove Button.
Put a mark next to " Repair Internet Explorer ", then click OK.

If IE 5.5 is not listed, then please post back with the name of the
installed antivirus program.
Are you on dialup or broadband ?
