I have Windows ME on my system and just got a ipod mini and the required
system requirements include only Windows SP4 and Windows XP. What are my
options to be able to go beyond this problem? Can't I just get a update
online? Thank you.

Service Pack 4 (SP4) is for the NT based OS called Windows 2000. Windows ME does NOT equal
Windows 2000.

There are no service packs for the Windows ME OS.

In addition, Windows XP is at Service Pack 2 (SP2) level.

Or, pay a lot less and buy and install Windows XP Home Edition OEM and do a
clean install. Back up your data first.

Let's be fair about this. You know that Carey cannot recommend
buying and installing the Windows XP Home Edition, OEM version,
to any consumer-user. No need to have tagged on to his post.

Sure he can. Why not? I can also recommend looking here
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...g/advisor.mspx for the
upgrade advisor so the person knows whether or not the old computer can be
upgrade, and then look at the "Check the Upgrade Eligibility" link for
further information. If there is a qualifying system AND the computer can
handle Windows XP, why not save some money?

Since when were MVP's allowed to push OEM units directly
to the consumer-user?

Where are you seeing any restrictions about what we can or can't say? I'm a
computer user, awarded for past assistance to peers. Microsoft doesn't
employ or pay me, and cannot throttle what I say as an individual. If you
believe we're "not permitted" to say certain things, you should read the
microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter newsgroup. The MCE bits are available
for purchase to everyone with "OEM" parts. That's a popular way to create
your own Media Center machine.

Life must be different today. Just a successful, former OEM
builder and VAR who got sick and tired of being told what to
say, sell and install (and how); now a mercernary freelancer
who builds whatever the client wants, from Windows 3.X to XP.

MVPs are volunteers, who try to assist peers in various places, including
public newsgroups. If Microsoft doesn't like what I say, they don't have to
award me and I'd continue doing what I love to do. Doesn't matter to me. I
owe people from the 1970's who helped me understand computers, and hope
people I help will do the same for others. Pay It Forward.
