I basically get all the way thru searching for updates and when it shows the
web dialog box nothing happens and I get no dowloads. I havent had any I
discovered since 2003 even with auto update turned on.

I tried some of the fixes on these threads but none have worked. It displays
this when I type the commands listed on one thread:

RegSVr32

LoadLibrary(“wucltui.dll” failed
Get last error returns oxooooo485

Ive searched everywhere for help on this. Please help!

To assure a clean install of anything, including Windows Updates, your
anti-virus application should be disabled and all other running processes
closed before beginning the install (and possibly even before going to
Windows Update page, for some).

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) [maybe iuhist.xml
in WinME?] for errors associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

Also see:

Windows Update Troubleshooter (ignore the V4 part)

PA Bear,

None of the things you listed did anything I'm afraid. I have tried all of
those trouble shooting things before to no avail, and the windows update log
command you suggested did nothing either. I didnt know what you meant by
this: iuhist.xml but I checked Windows ME support center and they suggested
the %windir%\Windowsupdate.log.

I have disabled my zone alarm, and norton system works but this made no
different either.

Any other suggestions? We have just had a problem with our laptop, in that
we had to reinstall something recently with help from ADP because something
caused the laptop to request the product key and it wouldnt start up even in
safe mode. Could this be the reason it wont update? It does have updates
waiting from 2 years ago though that havent been picked up by auto update.

help!

Where did you get the idea to try this? <eg>
Please pay attention to the OS of the OP when lurking before trying
something which was meant for another OS and not yours.

Well, precision helps. Instead of o's you should be typing 0's.
Then try to search for 0x00000485

You're using the web interface to newsgroups so it is really easy.
Just press Alt-7 to set focus to the input box and enter that string.

For example that lets you find my reply to "Snuggles", in July:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...b81&sloc=en-us

It didnt work anyway and I got it from posts on this section of the site.
I'm afraid I have no idea what you mean by anything you have written. What's
OP? I tried to enter the dll stuff after following all the prompts on the
help section of ME support and windows update help. The RegSVr32 stuff above
was typed out by me from a box that appeared on the screen to try to give
someone an idea of what was wrong. Apologies for getting the zeros wrong, was
a mistake and I cut and pasted it from the help page when I tried it so I
seriously doubt there was a problem with 'precision'.

Again, I don't understand.

Have read the posts. What am I supposed to do? This is all a bit baffling.

Please include all of previous message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup.

Windowsupdate.log or iuhist.xml will probably a hidden file. Before
searching for it in Windows Explorer, open the Advanced dialog in Search and
enable "hidden" and "system" file/folders option.

Start > Run > %windir%\Windowsupdate.log > OK will open the log, if it
exists.

Certainly. If you had no problems reaching Windows Update or running
Automatic Updates before ADP "helped" you, ADP should assist in the
resolution of your problem.

If the implied OS (from the Subject) implies WUv4
there won't be a WindowsUpdate.log but there will be
a Windows Update.log

Have I missed something? E.g. is MU or WUv6
now supporting that OS? <eg>

If he's looking for the one with a space in it
he should either use the Browse... button (to get some doublequotes)
or manually insert them.

Think. Search. Read. Repeat. <eg>

If you don't understand what you read, ask a question,
explaining what your difficulty is with what is written.

There is lots of shorthand used in newsgroups.
Either learn how to puzzle it out or search for posts
or web page articles where that topic is discussed.

For example, here is how you could have answered your own question
about my use of the term OP:

http://www.utdallas.edu/ir/tcs/techsupp/acronyms.htm

(MSN search for
OP newsgroup (shorthand OR acronyms)
- redirect from second hit
)

BTW I am disinclined to try to further help someone who doesn't appear
to be making a sincere effort to try to understand what I have written.
For example, I really have a hard time believing that you can't figure out
what I meant by:

>> You're using the web interface to newsgroups so it is really easy.
>> Just press Alt-7 to set focus to the input box and enter that string.

Nope. Win9x is still directed to V5 Engine site.

Then I definitely have missed that. I thought that all Win9x were still
using WUv4. And only NT5x, which had support for services such as
BITS, had been transferred to the WUv5 site.

However, the only document I can find which references both versions
isn't very clear about that detail.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-025.mspx

(MSN search for
"Windows Update Version 4" "Windows Update Version 5" "Windows 98" site:microsoft.com
)

<quotes>
Issued: July 30, 2004

Im not on Windows Update Version 5. How do I get it?
If youre on Windows XP and have Automatic Updates turned on, you will
receive Windows Update Version 5 automatically in the next few weeks.
If you dont have Automatic Updates turned on, you will be upgraded to
Windows Update Version 5 when you visit the Windows Update site after
the initial rollout to users with Automatic Updates is complete.
</quotes>

Somehow I have all along thought that this implied that WUv5
was a service meant only for NT5x users. I guess it doesn't
necessarily but then I would also wonder about the implementation
and the logs that it would create under a non-NT5x OS.
BTW NT4 users do have a kind of Automatic Updates
but can not use WUv5 either, which again I thought had
as much to do with implementation as policy.

In fact, I also had the idea that until recently that W2K and
WS2003 users were still using WUv4 and that some recent
service pack changes had enabled them to start using WUv5
but with mixed results because of the change in implementation.

Here's an article written by someone who evidently has the
same ideas, stated even more succinctly:

http://www.wmsoftware.com/kb/kb.asp?a=show&ID=50

<quote>
Windows Update version 5 is only available on computers
running Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP1.
</quote>

(Google web search for
"Windows Update Version 4" ("Windows Update Version 5" OR "Windows Update Version 6") ("Windows 2000" OR "Windows Server
2003") ("service pack 1" OR "service pack 4" OR SP1 OR SP4)
)

(BTW MSN failed with that one. <eg>)

Perhaps I should try seeing what changing my NT4 User-Agent
to look like a Win9x User-Agent does when attempting to
access WUv5. <EG>
