i had an error 39 on the cd rw when i fixed it the burner will not work

You have failed to advise what OS you're using including SP level. You also
have failed to advise what you did to fix the original error which caused
the second problem and finally, you're on the wrong Newsgroup.

Nonetheless see if this helps -

Check the properties of the CD Burner drive and click on the recording tab.
If the check mark to enable recording is checked, uncheck it and hit apply
and then recheck it and hit apply.
If that doesn't work see:

CD-R Drive or CD-RW Drive Is Not Recognized As a Recordable Device.


If not post to a more appropriate Newsgroup for your Operating System etc.
and provide further details as to what you did to *fix* the error (39) in
the first place which resulted in the second problem.

You are in the wrong newsgroup (this is not a discussion group)
As it has nothing to do with Windows Update, perhaps you should try a
general newsgroup for your operating system and ask there for a group
concerning hardware or CDs.
